Hi there,
Welcome to my first console game review for ps2! Please enjoy it! Leave a comment good or bad!
Need for Speed: Pro Street PS2
One of my favorite titles in the gaming world, I can’t recall playing first ever need for speed and I haven’t played Porsche Unleashed for ps1 and as far as I have heard it was good somewhat similar to High Stakes. That was just to say I know nfs series I know what I am writing about.
So it just came out recently for ps2, ps3, xbox 360. These days everyone knows need for speed series. And when you ask if they have played nfs, most of the times you they say they have played Underground 2 and it was gooood. To me that’s very wrong. Whenever I think of nfs I imagine expensive, exotic cars flying at ridicules speeds on these just beautifully built tracks and of course the cops trying to keep up behind you. But I guess I will still sit in the waiting zone for some time. And fans of underground and carbon – you guys better sit down somewhere too…
I have read some reviews on this title and they say that it isn’t that good but they still rate it 7 – 9. I still have to complete the whole game to give it a proper score, but I must set the record straight for this game. So without waiting more let’s start.
Let’s start with how the game begins. Straight away you are thrown into this race and after you get dissed by this Ryo. Personally I think they couldn’t have picked more ugly or irritating character. So the that’s your story, beat this Ryo at the top. It also irritates me that our “hero” always wears a helmet never says a word... I guess they want us to imagine ourselves there with that helmet. But we wouldn’t be wearing a helmet. And yes I would be shouting and would diss back this Ryo… They could have made a few nice CG cut scenes instead of all that annoying audio data The point that I’m leaning to is that there is no story and it’s fine you concentrate on your cars and events more, but even this minimum doesn’t cut it and I think fans wouldn’t mind seeing some character’s facial expression or hearing some voices. That is what the game lacks… but then again everyone just concentrated on physics of the cars and tracks. This edition to the nfs series was based on these real events and more organized street racing. They actually went to these racing days, watched what was happening and after that tried to create a game based on that. And that I guess was a great challenge because your car will get “Totaled” and you will pay tens of thousands to repair it or to get a new one. They did a great job on bringing back damage, well it’s not burnout but I think it does the job and I’m talking about the PS2 version. When I will get my hands on PS3 version I will update, but now get back to the topic. So yeah you get real damage, somewhat similar to nfs: high stakes (road challenge UK version) and tracks are similar looking too, not to mention the road signs… That I guess was because of the fans of old titles like myself. I wanted to write a letter to EA just to remind them how the game really gained attention in the first place. I guess I was not alone with these thoughts and so we got some of our stuff back. Since this game is based on these legal events they got rid of cops… now that’s a big downfall for me. But honestly I think they have created a good cop A.I. it is just not used for this game, we will just have to wait more. Think of it as The First Need for Speed: for the new generation machines like PS3. They wanted to do more experiments and see what could be done with PS3 power, that’s in my opinion. Now please don’t start to think the game is in fact less than really good and you should take a break from playing nfs and wait for something like underground or carbon. That is not true! This game is great. It has great selection of cars and a lot of them are from earlier titles, they also have this great looking new skyline and EA86, FD35 and the rest of the cast, plus EVO IX. Do you know those? That ugly looking Corolla… man It drifts! That brings me to gameplay.
You get great selection of events and there are quite a few modes to choose from so you wont get bored playing the same thing again and again. You also can always create your own custom event and if you got this game on PS3 get online and test others at your own event. You get new drifting system now you don’t loose points when you go out of bounds of the track it seems more realistic. Time Trial and Grip races witch are your usual races, Drag and Wheelie contests witch are quite hard to get the hang of especially when you have to do these burnouts before every start. And Top Speed and Speed Challenge witch are the ones where you try and make your car fly without crashing! And most of the time you have to have these different car types for every event and backup also backup cars. You will be playing like any other need for speed for days, customize your cars and try and get them to fly! Also the soundtrack to the game is as good as always featuring various artists. And well you should get it if you’re a nfs series fan you won’t get disappointed even if you can’t just ride around your city you will try and bet these records and “Dominate” these racedays. And that is what this game is about getting to the top and of Pro Street racing and never make a scratch on your car. For more reviews or videos check out gamespot.
My score 9.2
Because it doesn’t have cops, normal street traffic and there are no replays. And the space that was used for all that audio could have been used for something else. The rest is need for speed in a brand new setting.
